- Lifetime access to thirty-six online videos demonstrating poems and actions across the seasons for you to share with your children.
- Three downloadable poetry booklets ensuring you have the words to hand when you introduce the rhymes to your children.
- Special videos beneath some of the poems, where you can watch different groups of children reciting the poems in their own settings. (We are always looking for more of these so please send your examples in.)
How The Poetry Basket works
By watching the 36 videos contained in this programme, practitioners and children will learn up to thirty-six poems and their accompanying actions by heart. The poems follow the seasons of the year and are between 4 and 8 lines long. During each video, the poem is repeated three times to help cement it to memory. There is also a booklet of the words, to download, which can be shared with parents.
Regularly reciting poems has the following benefits:
- When reciting a poem with actions, children discover and use new words in an almost effortless way. It is as if the rhythm and the structure of the verse give context to these unfamiliar phrases.
- Poetry develops the skill of prediction, where the rhyming structure of the poems allows children to guess what word might come next.
- Saying a poem out loud emphasises the sounds and rhythms of language or the syllables contained in each word, a vital part of learning to read.
- Reciting Poetry together is fun.
The poems in this programme are suitable for children aged 2 to 7 years old.
